Why it is an amount and not a service

"One evening makeup" sounds better on a card and works worse in practice. The person receiving it may have no evening to go to, and may want the course instead — or the reverse.

A certificate for an amount leaves that choice with them. If they pick something more expensive they pay the difference; if they pick something cheaper the balance stays on the certificate until it expires.
